How Do I Find My KiwiSaver Provider?
To find your KiwiSaver provider, navigate your way to https://myir.ird.govt.nz/eservices/home/_/ and log in to your ‘myIR’.
You will be presented with a window that has a section approximately halfway down that reads ‘KiwiSaver member’.
Next to the title ‘KiwiSaver member’ is your KiwiSaver provider. If you do not have myIR set up, you can ring 0800 KIWISAVER (0800 5494 72837) and follow the phone prompts to find your KiwiSaver provider. The phone number will go through to the IRD, and you will need to enter or say your IRD number. You will then need to say you are calling about “KiwiSaver” and the KiwiSaver information you want relates to your “Scheme details”. You will also need to give your date of birth.
Is KiwiSaver Taxed?
Yes, your KiwiSaver returns are taxed. KiwiSaver funds are invested in a range of assets including shares, bonds, cash equivalents and others. Interest and dividends received on these assets are subject to tax in line with your prescribed investor tax rate (PIR).
However, you should note that your provider is responsible for paying any tax due. If your KiwiSaver balance grows, for example from $35,000 to $40,000 in a year without you contributing, you will not be responsible to pay tax on the $5,000 of returns. Similarly, you will not pay any tax when withdrawing your KiwiSaver.
How Much KiwiSaver Do I Pay?
Firstly, if you are self-employed, not employed, or not working in New Zealand, you will not be contributing anything towards your KiwiSaver investment unless you are doing so voluntarily.
If you are employed, how much you contribute to your KiwiSaver account is dependent on two things…
- How much you earn; and
- What your contribution rate is
You can either contribute 3%, 4%, 6%, 8%, or 10% of your gross salary before tax. Your employer is also legally required to match your KiwiSaver contributions up to a minimum of 3%, however their contributions are net of tax. For more information on employer contributions, you can refer to our article linked here.
